In 2005 Patty and I moved to Portland, Oregon to live in a floating home. At the time we did not know hardly a soul except for Patty's cousins who live here. Having been active as Auxiliarists, we naturally contacted the local Flotilla and immediately got active with our new boat. However, this did not provide a large social base so I contacted the local Masonic Lodges and settled into the Washington Masonic Lodge No 46. Our dance card immediately became full. Soon thereafter I became a member of the York Rite and got real active there. Our dance card filled up even more. And, although I am a Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner, their meeting locations are quite far and I became fully occupied at the Washington Masonic Center with York Rite and Lodge activities. The gist of the story is that, as a Mason, we immediately had a ton of friends and lots of activities to occupy us as though we had lived here for a lifetime. I also joined the Grotto, another Masonic social group, got involved in leadership with all of the York Rite bodies and have served as head of the Lodge, Cryptic Council, Royal Arch and Knight Templar Commandery. What fun. In addition I have become interested in knightly orders outside of Masonry and have been knighted three times and Patty has also been knighted. More about this on the Knighthood page.
